Vizhuthugal, a non-government organization, was started off by the socially concerned youths and students during 1992. Subsequently, as a matured organization, it was registered during 2003 in Coimbatore district of Tamilnadu. In the beginning, we were fiercely drawn into eradicating rampant child labour practices prevailing then. Later we were drawn into the needs of underprivileged among marginalized communities, especially children and women. Most of the beneficiaries belong to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities. They are normally undereducated and belong to landless family of workers in sanitation work, textile & garment industry and agriculture.
Vizhuthugal is a Tamil word representing the roots hanging from the branches of banyan tree housing large number of birds. These aerial roots have unique property of transforming into additional trunks of the tree to keep spreading the tree wider. While the Head Office is located in Avinashi of Tiruppur District, field Teams are spread across Tiruppur, Erode, Coimbatore and Nilgiris districts in western part of Tamilnadu.
Since the day of its inception, Vizhuthugal has been functioning relentlessly to provide awareness and trainings to marginalized communities. We support them persistently in attaining and improving their goals of social welfare, health care, education of their children and legal protection. Around 25 Children Resource Centers (CRCs), formed by Vizhuthugal, serve as platforms to prevent child labour practices, child trafficking and early marriages. We rescue and rehabilitate the school dropout children, abandoned children, unguided children and children of migrant workers. We accomplish these missions by facilitating formations of other social groups like Community Support Groups (CSG), Adolescent Girls Groups (AGG) and Adolescent Boys Groups (ABG). Our endeavors in Social Education and Development towards inclusive growth has been moving forward with the immense support and in collaboration with the members of the Elected Government bodies, Government Departments, Educational Institutions and socially concerned philanthropists.
